Mandelstam Leonid Biography
Mandelstam Mandelstam Leonid Isaakovich was born in Mogilev, but soon after his birth the family moved to Odessa. Until 12 years old he studied at home, in the city he immediately entered the Novorossiysk University for the mathematical department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. At that time, the famous physicist K. Brown, whose interests at that time, were mainly aimed, mainly to radiotea -telegraphs, in the city of physics.
After graduating with honors from the University, Mandelstam remains in Strasbourg. At first, as a personal assistant of Brown, he takes part in the research and tests of new acceptance devices produced in the laboratories of Siemens and Galsk, as a result of which a weak communications in the field of radio were opened. This discovery made Mandelstam a famous wide range of radio specialists.
The bibliography of L. Mandelstam, in the city of their friendship and joint work in the field of fluctuations and radio, lasted many years. Gradually, the scientific interests of Mandelstam are shifted to the problem of the interaction of electromagnetic waves with the substance, namely, to the issues of passing light through various environments. His first work in this area “On optically homogeneous and muddy environments” showed the fallacy that was generally recognized at that time of the Raleevsky theory of molecular dispersion of light.
The scientific works of the Strasbourg period quickly brought to Mandelstam fame and recognition in the scientific world. The brilliant physicist, Leonid Isaakovich also possessed outstanding mathematical abilities: he first applied the integral equations to the physical task for the first time - he built an accurate mathematical theory of optical images in Strasbourg in Leonid Isaakovich’s personal life: in the city in the city of GG.
Trying to engage in scientific activity at the same time, he travels a lot: Odessa - Tiflis - again Odessa - Moscow, he was offered a place for a consultant to a radio laboratory of the electrical trust of plants of weak current, then Leningrad in connection with the transfer of a radio laboratory there. Unfortunately, he is not able to carry out his designs in the field of experimental optics, but it was during these years that one of Leonid Isaakovich took shape - transferring to the optics of an idea of modulation of oscillations.
A fragment of the Belarus envelope, in the city of Mandelstam and Landsberg in February, made one of the most significant discoveries of the 20th century in optics simultaneously and regardless of Ch. Raman and K. Krishnan - the phenomenon of combinative dispersion of light.
From year to year, Mandelstam gave lectures and held seminars, formally for senior students, but popular among scientists. If Leonid Isaakovich was absent for any reason, the wits from science called such a seminar “tea without sugar”. The scientific influence and personal charm of Leonid Isaakovich attracted talented young scientists, graduate students and students to him.
Mandelstam - laureate of the award named after Lenin, prizes to them. Mendeleev, the State Prize was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Order of Lenin Useful links 1. Pechenkin, A. Leonid Isaakovich Mandelstam. Research, teaching and the rest of life.
